Oh when will this cruelty stop. Over 12 months I’ve managed to increase the traffic to this site by 500% purely from organic SEO techniques. Most traffic comes from providing relatively useful content for developers and web masters – I haven’t yet even attempted any form of link swap. It even brings in a little bit of revenue from advertising and affiliate sales. However, and I mean a really big HOWEVER, we aren’t converting any new customers.
This in a nutshell is one of the biggest problems with Search engine optimisation / marketing techniques. If you have the patience, SEO can be a great way to create trafic – and we have heaps of traffic. Traffic no problems – coming out of ears – visitors every where. But like the proverbial horse at the proverbial water, these guys just aren’t drinking.
Anyway the challenge now is to work out how to get these visitors to take the next step. One place I’m exploring is what can be done with our copy writing. I have my old friend (and AWARD school graduate) Tatiana Doroshenko looking over my own copy writing efforts to see what can be improved. At the same time I’m checking out articles from a number of cool copy writing / sale type people. The ones I’ve found most interesting so far are GrokDotCom and Marketing Words.
Alternatively I could just give up using this site to promote my own business and look at other ways to convert this traffic into revenue. I’ve become more interested lately in promoting myself more as an expert/consultant, so perhapes I need to do that and let Internet Guru morph into a resource site.
